In Africa, shea nuts stand as a crucial cash crop, involving over 16 million households and contributing significantly to rural economies. Specifically in East Africa, the shea nut industry sustains numerous families, with a substantial portion of shea butter being exported globally.

Uganda, with approximately 16,000 shea nut farmers, particularly in Northern Uganda, experiences steady industry growth. However, the sector faces challenges such as limited market access, unstable prices, and a lack of crucial information and resources. Esther Apili, a widow and mother of six in Abim district embodies the challenges faced by shea nut farmers. For her, the shea nut farming is more than a source of income; it’s a lifeline for her family and community. After her husband’s passing, Esther turned to communal shea nut trees for sustenance. Her Early mornings were spent collecting shea seeds to sell, initially struggling to provide for her family.

Over time, Esther diversified her farming activities with the 4 acres her husband left her, cultivating maize, sunflower, cassava, and even establishing a fishpond, contributing to her homestead and community food supply. Despite her determination, Esther faces the same disadvantages as a shea nut farmer without access to digital tools. The lack of real-time market information leaves her vulnerable to missed opportunities and price volatility. Unpredictable weather patterns further jeopardize her crops, and the absence of access to weather updates puts her at risk of substantial losses. Additionally, without digital tools, Esther’s agricultural knowledge and record-keeping are hampered, limiting her access to services like loans, insurance, and credit scores.

The Digital Economy Program, a recently launched collaborative initiative between Innovation Village and Mastercard Foundation has over the months partnered with organizations like Uganda National Farmers Federation, and technology solution providers like Hamwe East Africa, MobiPay Agrosys Ltd, Service Cops, together with banks like Equity Bank Uganda to extend services to last mile farmers like Esther.

This transformative initiative aims to digitally profile farmers through biometrics, provide real-time market information, and ensure fair pricing for last-mile individuals. Through this program, Esther will receive a digital card, granting her access to a range of services. Working closely with technology solution providers, Esther can now leverage digital platforms to monitor weather conditions, optimize agricultural practices, and access crucial services.

The program extends beyond farming, bridging digital financial services and knowledge sharing platforms through its partnerships with banks and insurance companies. For Esther, this means more than safeguarding her farm; it signifies securing a stable future for her family and community. The program recognizes that it’s not just farmers who need support; it’s the entire community. By collaborating with various stakeholders, the program aims to digitally transform last-mile users and communities in agriculture and particularly the shea nut value chain. The impact is set to be groundbreaking, with a goal of reaching 3.4 million youth, women, smallholder farmers, and farmers like Esther. Among the program’s objectives, Esther and her fellow farmers should have access to essential resources such as real-time information, weather updates, and best agricultural practices.

Empowering individuals like Esther involves skilling and providing tools for informed decision-making, breaking barriers to education, healthcare, credit scores, and other services. Through the positive impact of digitalization, the program seeks to uplift not only Esther but her entire community, creating a cycle of growth and development that touches every aspect of community life.

Digitalization will bring several key advantages to shea nut farming in Uganda, transforming farmers’ lives by empowering them with the tools to make informed decisions that significantly impact their livelihoods. The introduction of digital services will ensure fair pricing for shea nuts, providing economic stability and dignity in their work. The program will work closely with partners to digitize the entire value chain, from farm to market.

This story is not just about technological innovation but also about digital inclusion, resonating with the entire African continent. As the Digital Economy Program unfolds, the goal is to digitally profile farmers like Esther, ensuring that last-mile users are included in this digital revolution. The program aims to create a brighter future for generations to come where Esther and farmers like her are central to this transformation, stepping into the spotlight as inspirations for farmers in other value chains looking to be digitized. Ultimately, the program promises to impact Esther’s life positively, providing her with the resources and knowledge to secure a stable and prosperous future for her family and community.

In the beautiful landscapes of Abim District, where challenges abound, farmers have long grappled with issues ranging from insecurity to a lack of digital skills. The remote nature of the area poses logistical challenges, making transportation a tedious task for both people and crucial agricultural inputs. This harsh reality encapsulates the daily struggles faced by those determined to cultivate the land.

Stella Rose Alungat, a 27-year-old young woman decided to take the first step to pioneer the digitilization of her community. Like many others, she embraced the Digital Economy Program in Abim district. The program is an innovative initiative, being implemented by Innovation Village and Mastercard Foundation with several other partners and aims to empower farmers through digital solutions while extending services to last mile communities.

Alungat assumes a central role in maintaining the digital agent network in Abim district. She is responsible for onboarding and training agents in biometric profiling, technology, and modern farming practices. These agents, equipped with the knowledge imparted by Alungat, subsequently extend the same training to farmers at the grassroots level. This process serves as a lifeline for those who have long aspired to access better opportunities in their rural community. “In the absence of digital tools, communication and coordination are challenging, making it difficult to address farmer needs promptly,” says Alungata. Her commitment to embracing digital tools stems from witnessing the struggles of farmers facing delays in receiving essential supplies, resulting in untimely planting and increased costs. The lack of real-time information exacerbates issues like market fluctuations and unfair pricing practices, leading to financial strain and unfavorable credit terms for the farmers.

Stella’s journey into digital empowerment began as a district coordinator for Agro Tourism, where her strong connections with farmer groups led her to Hamwe East Africa where she now works as the territory executive for Abim district. Initially leading a dynamic team of sixteen agents, she has overseen the profiling of over 4000 farmers at the district level. Through digital financial services and multiple other services offered on the Hamwe East Africa platform, she ensures fair pricing for farmers, enabling direct payments into their bank accounts and reducing the risks associated with handling cash.

Beyond technology, Stella’s role is about empowerment. She actively engages with different groups in her community, inspiring youths to embrace digital literacy and connecting them to opportunities provided by Hamwe East Africa under the Digital Economy Program. Her guidance motivates fellow youth to become active participants in the digital revolution reshaping their community. Alungat’s team of agents is not just about change; they are guiding farmers, imparting digital skills, and facilitating seamless farming processes. Technology is becoming a powerful ally in Abim, from purchasing inputs to accessing markets and sharing crucial seasonal and climate information. Stella serves as the vital link connecting Hamwe East Africa to shea nut farmers whose major source of income is agriculture. Her days are dedicated to collaborating with farmers, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), and agents, guiding the profiling process and ensuring necessary resources within the agricultural and shea nut value chain are accessible. Her impactful efforts have greatly instilled hope, fostering a stronger and more connected farming community in Abim.

Through digitalization, Abim farmers are experiencing a profound impact on their lives. Processes that were once manual and cumbersome are now streamlined, thanks to Stella’s guidance. Profiled Farmers can access real-time data, weather updates, and best practices, resulting in increased yields, improved incomes, and a brighter outlook for the entire community. As the digital revolution continues, more young individuals are joining the cause.

The Digital Economy Program’s journey in Abim district is far from over, but the strides made so far are evident. Dignified work is no longer a dream; it is a reality within arm’s reach and woven into the fabric of the community’s future. Alungat’s story is a testament to the power of digital technologies, the resilience of rural communities, and the commitment to creating dignified work for the youth. Together, they are nurturing a new era of prosperity, where digital tools and unwavering determination transform not only lives but entire communities.

In recent years, the African financial technology (FinTech) sector has experienced significant growth, driven by a combination of regulatory reforms, an increased adoption of digital technology, and a burgeoning entrepreneurial spirit. Like other nations in Africa, Uganda has witnessed a notable surge in the adoption of innovative financial solutions, leading to enhanced financial inclusion and the facilitation of seamless digital transactions for businesses and consumers.

Earlier this week, the Zambian government hosted the tenth annual Africa FinTech Summit in Lusaka, convening various industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators from across the continent.

The summit aimed to discuss the transformative potential of financial technology in driving economic growth and fostering financial inclusion. Against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving digital landscape, the summit shed light on the pivotal role of FinTech in shaping Africa’s economic future and spurring innovation across various sectors.

During his opening remarks, Dr. Denny Kalyalya, the Governor of the Bank of Zambia, highlighted the significant digital transformation within Zambia’s financial industry, particularly the remarkable uptake of mobile money services. Notably, mobile money transactions in the country increased from 7 billion Kwacha in 2017 to nearly 300 billion Kwacha in 2022. Dr. Kalyalya attributed this remarkable growth to the widespread adoption of digital financial services by the public.

Acknowledging the positive influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on the FinTech sector, Dr. Kalyalya emphasized the surge of entrepreneurs innovating FinTech-enabled solutions and the increasing interest of venture capitalists in supporting emerging FinTech innovators. He highlighted the success of Chit-Chat App, a digital platform that enables customers to stay connected, make instant payments, and conduct money transfers, as one of the notable start-ups that attracted the attention of venture capitalists.

Formerly known as Zazu, this start-up has steadily established itself as a reliable and credible FinTech player in Zambia.

Despite these significant advancements, Dr. Kalyalya noted that the FinTech sector in Zambia is grappling with the unintended entry of illicit fundraising methods and an upsurge in digital fraud over the past few years. He stressed the importance of prudent regulations within the Zambian FinTech sector to combat potential criminal activities. Dr. Kalyalya emphasized the need for regulations that foster a productive and growth-oriented financial sector, without stifling innovation or progress. He added the Bank of Zambia’s commitment to creating an enabling environment that allows stakeholders to flourish and add value within the growing FinTech sector.

Like Zambia, Uganda’s financial landscape witnessed the digital disruption in 2009 when MTN Uganda introduced the first mobile money transaction service platform, allowing customers to transact money, make payments and access other financial services using their mobile phones. Today, the sector has grown to more than 170 private players consisting of mobile network operators, commercial banks, non-bank financial institutions, third-party operators, FinTech innovators, and technology providers operating within the FinTech market.

Vincent Malekani, the Country Business Development Director at Mastercard, while sharing his observations on the evolving trends in payment methods, noted the rapid adoption of innovative payment technologies, especially in the South African market. “As Mastercard, one of the things we have witnessed is the acceleration of new payment methods, with 95% of consumers in South Africa using an emerging payment method in 2022.” This statistic not only highlights a significant shift in consumer payment preferences but also illustrates the dynamic nature of the financial transaction landscape.

While delivering her speech, Linnisa Wahid, The Deputy Chief of Missions at the US Embassy in Lusaka, emphasized the growth potential in digital technology on the continent and the remarkable strides made by tech startups in various markets. She acknowledged the challenges posed by technological evolution and the importance of fostering a conducive environment for FinTech’s full potential. She also emphasized the need for industry and government collaboration to enhance access, bolster infrastructure, and promote digital literacy.

She added, “We recognize the swift pace of technological evolution and the consequent challenges it poses to governments in terms of regulation. Particularly when technological innovations intersect with crucial sectors like telecommunications and finance. But a conducive environment is pivotal to dismantle barriers, harnessing FinTech’s full potential. The onus is not just on governments but also on industry to foster self-regulation that aligns with the principles of competition, consumer protection, security, and ethical management.”

What the Digital Economy Program X-Techs had to say

With the valuable partnership of industry leaders like Mastercard Foundation, the Innovation Village through its digital economy program fosters a conducive environment, shared resources, and an extensive network that empowers budding entrepreneurs and innovators to devise solutions tailored for serve the last mile communities. To expand the reach of digital services in remote areas, the program nurtures local tech talent to enable the development of customized digital solutions addressing the specific challenges faced by the Uganda financial sector.

Allen Najjuko, Partner Success Manager at the Innovation Village, highlighted the purpose for participating at the Africa FinTech Summit: “Our mission at the Innovation Village is to support, empower, and connect innovators who are shaping the future of the digital economy. Events like the Africa FinTech Summit provide a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and networking that is instrumental in achieving our goals. We believe in the potential of African innovation to drive positive change.”

Carol Kakooza, a solution provider, CEO of Axiom Zon, and a partner in the Digital Economy Program, emphasized the importance of the summit: “For us, the Africa FinTech Summit represents an opportunity to showcase the transformative potential of FinTech solutions in Africa, especially in Uganda. Our collaboration with the Innovation Village and the DE Program allows us to be part of a movement that brings innovative solutions to the forefront, enhancing financial inclusion and driving economic growth.”

Lionel, a representative from another Xtech, Gnugrid, underlined the significance of the summit: “Gnugrid believes in the power of African innovation. The Africa FinTech Summit is a prime platform to share our journey, collaborate with other stakeholders, and contribute to the growth of the African digital economy. It’s a testament to Africa’s potential in the global tech arena.”

In conclusion, the Digital Economy Program seamlessly integrates with the objectives of the Africa FinTech Summit, fostering innovation, promoting digital financial inclusion, and empowering African entrepreneurs to create solutions that benefit underserved communities. As the FinTech sector continues to evolve, it is through partnerships and collaborative efforts that Africa can lead the way in shaping the future of finance and technology.

The agricultural sector in Africa has witnessed a remarkable journey of transformation over the years. From traditional farming practices to embracing modern technologies, this evolution has brought about substantial changes in the way farming is conducted, particularly in East Africa and Uganda. The advent of digital solutions has played a pivotal role in reshaping the agricultural landscape of agriculture, empowering both smallholder farmers and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) to thrive in an increasingly connected world.

Africa’s agricultural history has been characterized by subsistence farming and challenges such as low productivity, post-harvest losses, and limited access to markets. However, in recent years, governments and stakeholders have recognized the potential the sector holds to drive economic growth and food security. This has led to policy reforms, investments in infrastructure, and the integration of technology to modernize farming methods. Within East Africa, the agricultural sector has been undergoing a significant transformation. Countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda have experienced a surge in innovative approaches aimed at boosting productivity and sustainability. These efforts include the adoption of precision agriculture, climate-smart practices, and the utilization of digital platforms to enhance market access.

Amidst the breathtaking landscapes of East Africa, a silent revolution is unfurling across Uganda. In the heart of this transformation lies an inspiring narrative of rural empowerment, powered by the relentless surge of digital solutions. Uganda has been a notable player in the digital transformation of agriculture with a predominantly agrarian economy. The country has harnessed the power of mobile technology to connect farmers with vital tools and information.
In today’s rapidly evolving world, the digital economy has emerged as a powerful force, transforming industries, creating new job opportunities, and connecting people like never before. Recognizing the potential of the burgeoning digital economy to uplift lives and livelihoods, The Innovation Village partnered with the Mastercard Foundation to launch the Digital Economy Program a few months back, where we aim to provide a blend of digital infrastructure, tools, skilling, and channels to support innovators in bringing opportunities closer to young people, women, smallholder farmers, small businesses, and others across hard-to-reach communities in Uganda. Let’s delve into the details and explore how this initiative is unlocking opportunities and empowering individuals.

Digital Infrastructure and Tools: At the core of the Digital Economy Program lies the provision of digital infrastructure and tools. These essential components act as the foundation for driving economic growth and innovation. By establishing robust digital networks, expanding internet access, and enhancing connectivity, the program enables individuals and communities to harness the full potential of the digital age. Additionally, the program equips entrepreneurs and businesses with digital tools and technologies that enable them to streamline operations, reach wider audiences, and optimize their efficiency.

Skilling and Training: To truly participate in the digital economy, individuals need to possess the necessary skills and knowledge. The Digital Economy Program recognizes this need and places a strong emphasis on skilling and training. Through various initiatives such as webinars, workshops, and online courses, the program equips individuals with digital skills, empowering them to seize opportunities in the digital realm. By providing training in areas like digital marketing, e-commerce, coding, and data analytics, the program ensures that participants are well-prepared to navigate the digital landscape and thrive in their chosen endeavors.

Impact on Communities: The Digital Economy Program is designed to reach and uplift communities, particularly those in hard-to-reach areas. By bridging the digital divide and enabling access to digital tools and resources, the program empowers individuals to improve their lives and livelihoods. For instance, in partnership with several implementing channel partners like Uganda National Federation of Farmers (UNFFE) and Federation of Small and Medium enterprises (FSME) smallholder farmers and SME’s can leverage digital platforms to access market information, connect with buyers, and optimize their agricultural and business practices. Entrepreneurs, men and women can establish online businesses, expanding their customer base beyond geographical limitations. Young people will acquire digital skills that open diverse career opportunities. The program’s impact extends far and wide, creating a ripple effect that positively transforms communities.
